All fruit was whole bunch pressed and 100% wild fermented. A small part of the wine, about 10% of the blend, was fermented and aged in clay amphorae, while the rest was fermented and matured in older 400-and 500L barrels. The wine spent nine months on its lees before blending and bottling.

Baked apple, lemon curd, honey, and ripe peach aromatics lead into an equally copious palate, with apricots, kumquats, and lime peel keenly expressive. That layered and dense core of fruit is balanced by freshness on the nose that is beautifully kelpy and briny, akin to sea spray. Tension and richness are expertly balanced.

Winery Profile

Gabriëlskloof is the realisation of a dream for South African Bernhard Heyns, who searched for several years to find the unique piece of land that would ‘root him to the spot’. Local farmer Barry Anderson had heard about Bernhard’s mission and arranged to meet him on a windy summer’s day in 2001 at a farm called “Avontuur” on the outskirts of Botrivier. Both immediately recognised the potential of this piece of land (at the time covered with wheat and canola, and home to a few wandering sheep) and soon after, Bernhard bought what is today Gabriëlskloof.
