5 star – Michael Cooper
The impressive 2016 vintage (5*) was estate-grown on the northern side of the Wairau Valley, hand-picked and matured for 20 months in French oak barriques (partly new). It has deep, still fairly youthful colour and a fragrant, savoury bouquet. Mouthfilling, with concentrated, ripe cherry, plum and spice flavours, it shows excellent complexity, with finely balanced tannins and lots current-drinking appeal.
