The aromas include rosehip and white pepper. The palate is forward, yet sweet, with rich full flavours followed by a silken acidity; with elegant rather than aggressive tannin. The texture is sensual without being overpowering. As black as thunder and sweet as a teenage kiss. The savoury acidity is Pinot silk-like that flows leaving a current of tantalising dark fruit on a warm landing.

Deep, ruby-black with a purple hue, lighter edged. The nose is delicate and powerful at the same time, vividly layered spices, gamey notes and violet underlined blackberries, young Doris plums and medicinal herbs. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich with brilliant vibrancy, nuances of plums and blackberries intermix red berries; liquorice, minty herbs and spices enriched by meaty and savoury elements. Concentrated flavours harmonised fine-grained tannin extractions, provide a dusty and firm grip, linger with lively acidity and black tea fragrance to a long, lingering finish. The wine shows good energy and complexity, will age gracefully with careful cellaring. Match with slow-cooked lamb shoulder and venison over the next 8+ years. Fruit was sourced from the steep slopes in the foothills of Poverty Bay. Handpicked, destemmed, native yeast fermented in 1000 litre Cuves with 5% viognier in whole cluster. Aged in 600-litre demi-muids. Organic and biodynamic certified. Unfined, vegan friendly. 19+/20 pts

Considered pioneers in biodynamic wine, Millton Vineyards have been crafting wine using low-impact techniques since their very beginnings in 1984. They were one of the first to achieve Demeter certification, guaranteeing the highest standard of biodynamic agriculture and horticulture. To further solidify this commitment, in June 2012, James Milton was named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit as recognition for his services to the New Zealand wine industry.
